Oooh The Names I've Called Them !!!!!!
I found out Monday morning that the IT review at my place of work has made my position, along with all the senior IT managers positions, 'disestablished' ..(My boss as well). I've been made redundent ...or will be on the 8th June ..
I cannot believe the stupidity of it ...The new proposed structure is a complete backward step. But that's what you get when you take the wrong political side in these things ... The internal fightings and squabling has gone on for some 3+ years ....
I wanted out anyway ... But of course would have rather done it on my terms .... Still with the redundency and a months paid notice, which I will tell them I want paying out and leave immediately, we're OK for a few months .... even til the end of the year ..
So Gardening leave for me :O) Ideally I would like a month or two off from work completely ...In 31 years of working, the most time I've taken is about 5 weeks .... So it's probably a good opportunity to take time out ... In the middle of damned winter.... sheesh!
Having said that I'll grab any job offered when it's offered ...In this economic environment I can't afford not to ....
And on that, I've been at a conference Tue/Wed and have started to tell people I know whats happening .. One senior manager from a vendor made a number of phone calls on my behalf within two hours of me telling him - with a couple of leads of possibilities over the next couple of months ........
Humbling really that people are so willing to help...
McD as well has come up with a couple of contacts that might be fruitful ...
So - who knows where this will lead ..:O)

Dinzie: My heart goes out to you. I hope a little of my good luck drifts your way through all the time zones, latitudes and longitudes. I had a few days of visceral emotions when I heard I was "redundant", then dusted myself off, started a new Mind Map and good fortune started opening doors for me.
Now for the big stuff...You've taken five weeks off at a time?!?! I'd kill for two. Maybe it was just my self-deluding sense that the world couldn't get along without me. Even in my nearing retirement, I think I'll still be filling every inch with activity - though I bought my first plant to start my bonsai collection. It's a delightful light pink Leptospermum scoparium. Great trunk and root structure. I'll photo and blog.
Best luck to you. If there's anything I can do from this hemisphere, lemme know.
You have put a positive spin on what must be a bit of a stressful situation. I am glad that there is hope and yes! Do take as much time as you can. Immediately sounds good too.
It must be the beautiful place that you live that gives you such a philosophical attitude - well done.
Those photos really are breathtaking - both the views and the vineyard shots are gorgeous!
dinzie, i can empathize! i've been "impacted," as we so fondly call it here in the states, two times in my 30 year career in engineering. (and i'm proud to say i've been fired once!) the last time i was let go forced me into consulting, which has been uphill, but a change for the best over the last 8 years. sounds like you can afford this break, which is great. i look forward to hearing what you decide to do next. also, thanks for commenting on my blog.
